Trip to Cluj

On Wednesday we went to Cluj. It was a funny time and we visited the ,, Botanic Garden", the ,,Ortodox church", we made a tour of Cluj and we bought a lot of clothes from Polus Center.

The Orthodox Cathedral is the most famous Eastern Orthodox church of Cluj-Napoca, Romania. Built in a Romanian Brâncovenesc style, a synthesis of Renaissance and Byzantine architecture, it lies on the Avram Iancu Square, together with the Cluj-Napoca National Theatre and the Avram Iancu Statue.

The Lucian Blaga National Theatre in Cluj-Napoca, Romania is one of the most prestigious theatrical institutions in Romania. The theatre shares the same building with the Romanian Opera.

The Botanical Garden

The Botanical Garden is affiliated to the “Babes-Bolyai” University of Cluj-Napoca; it was founded in 1920 by the university professor Alexandru Borza. The garden is organized based on rigorous scientific principles as far as the plant classification and phytogeography are concerned; this is harmoniously combined with the artistic refinement which turns it into an extremely charming and picturesque site.

The garden spreads over 14 hectares of hilly land, which seems to favor successfully the growth of extremely diverse types of plants, coming from every corner of the world. The plant collections account for around 10,000 distinctive groups. The area is divided into several sections based on the special type of the plants: ornamental, phytogeographic, systematic, economic and medicinal. The Romanian flora is well represented by the vegetation characteristic to the Transylvanian Plain, to the Carpathian Mountains, to the regions of Banat and Oltenia, to the seaside dunes, etc.

One of the main attractions here is the Roman Garden, dominated by the statue of the goddess Ceres and by several archeological artifacts dating from the Roman age of the Napoca municipium. This section is meant to depict an ancient Roman garden with the vegetables and flowers that were then cultivated and which are still to be found in our peasant gardens nowadays.

Church with moon

The cathedral of the orthodox episcopate of Oradea, the Church with Moon was built between 1784-1790, in baroque style with neoclassical influences after the plans of the architect Éder Jakab. The inside pictures were realized by the Teodorovici brothers and by Paul Murgu. It has a bell-tower of 55 m high.

In the tower under the clock there is a sphere with a diameter of 3 m painted half black and half golden. With the help of a mechanism the ball rotates in function of the rotation of the Moon

round the Earth presented by his rotation all the Moon periods. The mechanism made in 1973 by the clock-maker Georg Rueppe sill functions.

Nufarul termal – The water lily

Few people know that in Romania, near Oradea at Felix Baths there is a reservation of thermal lilies unique in Europe.

This flower grows in a pool filled by a hot spring called Peta. The water lily is a subtropical

plant similar to the Lotus from the Nile`s waters. It is supposed that the seeds were brought here by Turks or by the migrate birds and they burgeon because of the thermal water.

The water lily flowers open up their leaves only in crepuscule and in the morning, when the water`s temperature passes over 30ْC, the flowers close to protect themselves.

Nymphaea Lotus or the thermal water lily was declared natural monument in 1931. It is also the symbol of Felix baths a small spa city located 8km from Oradea, in the North-West part of Romania.

It`s great to spend one weekend in Felix, enjoy the sun and see the flowers.

Palatul Vulturul Negru

The Black Eagle palace

The Black Eagle Palace, was built in the Union Square in the years 1907-1909, on the base of an old inn having the same name.

A characteristic of this pile is the passage with glass which makes the connection between three streets and also the stained glass window representing the town symbol, the eagle. This bird represent the power and that`s why many institutions like the churches, the Royal families and empires had it.

The style of decorating the palace has two main themes: the one with curved lines and flower motives and the geometrical one.

Last minutes in Romania of our friends

Friday was the last day with our friends. It was an unhappy day, because they left. We cried a lot and they said ,,Goodbye" with tiers.

Friendship forever

“Friendship forever” is the name of the project between our school and Kvinlog Skule from Norway. There is a very good relationship between the students from our school and the ones in Norway. Last summer some students from our school went to Norway with some teachers. They were welcomed warmly by the Norwegian children. They visited many interesting places and the homes of the Norwegian students. They stayed there two weeks. When they returned home they couldn't stop talking about their trip.

This year, a group of Norwegian students along with their teachers came to our school for a short visit. At first they stayed in a hotel, but they were invited at home by the children, to spend there the last week.

The kids from Norway are very open-minded and sociable. We tried to speak to them. Some of us spent our free time with them in town just talking or having a juice together. It seemed they liked our town and our country. During their stay here they tried to describe their country for us. A show was organized for their coming. They are the ones who started the show. They performed a dance from Norway. Then a folk group from our town came and danced for them. There was also a play in English called The Beauty and the Beast performed by our schoolmates. Then some cute kids from our school presented a modern dance. Our English teacher was also our translator.

We liked everything about those days. We learned something new, we made some new friends!

Outdoor activities

The Norwegian Students

A group of students from Norway came to visit our town at the end of March. Our school has a partnership with a school from Norway. For the project called “Friendship forever” Simion Barnutiu Secondary School invited the children from Norway to Zalau. We had many fun activities.

The visitors seemed very interested in the activities we had inside the classroom and outside.

I was very impressed by the children's desire to know the Romanian ways. People from our school tried to welcome the visitors the best they could. We offered them traditional dishes and I think they liked it, or at least they were curious.

Despite the bad weather, all the activities took place in the best conditions.

This Norwegian visit was a great honor for our school and I will always remember it!
